It was a great privilege to have been able to invite Dr. Wendy Edwards to come our centre to speak to the topic : ‘Autism – a Medical Condition’ on Feb. 23, 2012.
Dr. Edwards shared with us her research on three key areas of medical dysfunction in the patient with autism :
1. Gastrointestinal dysbiosis and inflammation; abnormalities of the immune system
2. Metabolic abnormalities
3. Increased oxidative stress and abnormal detoxification
Dr. Edwards explained how diets and the environment interact. How our bodies may react to the food we eat; and how those reactions affect us (and our children) if the immune system is impaired. We felt very empowered by the information. I dare say many of us are preparing to try dietary intervention in the attempt to further improve our children.
OMA have received many requests for Dr. Edwards’ presentation. With Dr. Edwards’ permission, here it is, the slides Dr. Edwards have presented in the Information Night.
Enjoy . . .
There is really nothing more satisfying than watching a child grow and blossom. Also, there is nothing more amusing than listening to the parents’ evolving ‘complaints’.
I squatted in front of the door to meet a child at her eye level; she came up to me and requested ‘I want to open wah doi-eee !’ I replied “OK, I will open the door.” The child flew into the playroom with a resounding ‘HIii-eee’ to greet her friends. I still remember the first day I met this child a little over a year ago; being completely non-verbal she chose to greet me with a bite (on my hand).
Today, 15 months later, she read the book ‘My Messy Room’ to me with full baby accent and announced proudly to the world : ‘I Like it, I like it, I like it !’. Her Speech Therapist was impressed to see her saying ‘OPEe-O’ to request a door to be opened a few months ago; she will be absolutely amazed to see this child again in September - after a 6 months break. This child has acquired speech through literacy at the age of 3 and a half.
The grandparents used to look very tense and worried a year ago. They are now ‘complaining’ that this child talks non-stop.
We have seen this child blossom in all areas. Not only she has acquired speech, she has also acquired many play skills. This child used to get angry when she was presented with a doll; she would now sit the doll down beside her and ‘talk’ to the doll as if it were a friend. She also broke all the doll house chairs by sitting on them herself.
The parents have graciously agreed to share with us 2 video clips of this child reading at home. In a short 15 months this lovely child has developed into a completely different person. How very exciting.
Now sit back, click the ‘ From the Parents’ tab and enjoy the result of a child’s hard work . . .
